After designing their new name and brand, Span and renown director and Guggenheim fellow Carlos Javier Ortiz created a short overview film for One Family Illinois, a charitable organization dedicated to building the future of foster care by keeping families of siblings together in one household. Span’s John Pobojewski developed the narrative from two perspectives: foster parent Fatina Wilson and One Family’s CEO Delphine Rankin. These voices represent the core pillars of the organization’s model of care — supporting the family and building the community.
Wilson, a professionally licensed foster parent, shares her experience raising sixteen children in her home and adopting two as her own over seven years. She tells of One Family’s unique model of support, which provides free single-family housing and dedicated support services on site within small communities of homes in neighborhoods in the Chicago area. Rankin highlights the organization’s broader vision, including free culinary, health, and education programs that extend their impact beyond the homes, fostering stronger neighborhood connections and elevating entire communities. The story was refined in collaboration with Conlon Strategies’ Sara Stern to resonate with donors and key stakeholders within the child welfare system.
Span designed and edited the film, working closely with Ortiz’s cinematography and direction. By emphasizing the vibrant color found within these homes through clothing, children's artwork, and the fall color within the community, the film instills the spirit of joy that runs throughout each One Family community. Ortiz’s blend of slow motion and hand-held shots lends authenticity and intimacy, immersing viewers in the everyday experiences of the families and the transformative power of One Family’s care.
