The Chicago Architecture Center’s exhibition The Legacy of Wrigley Field traces the ballpark’s evolution from its 1914 origins as Weeghman Park to its designation as a National Historic Landmark. Through the lens of architecture and design, the exhibition explores the stadium’s role as both a sports venue and a cultural icon, celebrating its ivy-covered walls, red marquee, and generations of memories made in its stands.
Span collaborated closely with the CAC’s curatorial team to design an immersive experience that honors the spirit of Wrigley Field. Drawing inspiration from the stadium’s own design elements, as well as early Chicago Cubs program graphics by Otis and Dorothy Shepard, we crafted a visual identity that feels both nostalgic and dynamic. Bold typography and vibrant wall graphics echo the Shepards’ playful, modernist approach while nodding to the ballpark’s enduring visual language.
A highlight of the exhibition is a working recreation of Wrigley Field’s iconic mechanical scoreboard. Visitors can manually update team names and scores, offering a tactile, participatory connection to the game-day experience. This interactive centerpiece, alongside interpretive panels and archival imagery, deepens visitors’ appreciation for Wrigley’s architectural and cultural legacy.
