001. Manhattan is the first book in a new series 00# by photographer Brandon Alexander, with John Pobojewski returning as creative and design partner—the second time the two have collaborated, following 2021’s VAS.
00#, an ongoing visual diary whose only fixed structure is place: each volume is housed by wherever circumstance has situated Alexander during a particular period of his life. Rather than documenting from a distance, the series records what emerges through prolonged encounters—an accumulating ledger of perception, contingency, and symbolism.
Each book in the series will move to a different location, pairing a new body of Brandon’s photography with a visual identity built to match. For Manhattan, that meant designing a generative cover system: torn paper, grit, decay, and rubbings of brick, cement, and other urban materials, recombined by code into a composition unique to each of the edition’s 100 copies.
With programming and design by Pobojewski, the cover illustrations evoke the texture and tapestry of the city itself—beauty inseparable from its chaos. No two covers are alike, so no two readers hold quite the same impression.
Alexander concludes the book with a lighthearted letter addressed to an ambiguous recipient.
