Designed while at Thirst

Forty-Five is a journal of outside design research edited and published by Jonathan D. Solomon and David Hays. The journal is a new model for design discourse — blending the informality of an online blog with the academic rigor of peer-reviewed papers. Thirst created an identity, website, and innovative digital publishing platform.

Forty-Five allows papers published on their site to be curated by visitors into print on-demand books, like a playlist or an RSS feed. Each publication comes directly from the printer, with minimal coordination by the editorial team. Content is synced between InDesign and the website using a custom workflow integration.

The homepage is inspired from the pin-up board — messy and in-progress. Authors and tags can be easily sorted with a single click.

Individual papers are designed to be highly-legible and easily annotated.
