The Farnsworth House is a historic house museum located in Plano, Illinois. Designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, it is recognized worldwide as an iconic example of modernist architecture. Our studio was asked to design the layout of a publication for an exhibition at the visitors center that would tell the story of the land surrounding the Farnsworth House.
The narrative spans thousands of years—from the Ice Age, through Native American habitation, early settlers, and finally to the construction of the Farnsworth House itself. To help set the context for the publication, we created a distinctive cover wrap for the book, with one side featuring a map using lidar data to represent the landscape’s topography and vegetation. On the reverse, a collage places the house alongside native plants throughout the seasons.
