In Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet, before the two lovers meet their fate, Tybalt is killed by Romeo’s hand. Lady Capulet has a famously overwrought reaction, suggesting that their relationship might be… something more.

This intrigue inspired Chicago Repertory Ballet’s artistic director Wade Schaaf to create an original ballet entitled The Capulets, based the family’s complex dynamics. Set in Verona, Italy, the ballet overlaps with key events in Romeo & Juliet while developing a new sensual narrative of deceit and death. Span’s John Pobojewski and Zach Minnich designed a visual identity for the show as well as a corresponding teaser campaign to launch Fall 2025.

The mark is constructed from customized letterforms derived from Didot Modern, a new interpretation of the famously Italian genre of typefaces called Didone, known for narrow serifs and high contrast. The family crest 'C' wraps itself around two separate nude 3D figures — both Lord and Lady — rendered in slightly translucent draped silk fabric.

Span will be creating digital sets for the world premiere of The Capulets, to open at Chicago’s Ruth Page Theatre in November 2025.
